If future events regarding the pandemic require that the conference may need to be postponed or canceled for the safety of all, this decision will be broadcast on the conference website.

OBJECTIVE (WLC18)

The surface water bodies have been impacted by the environmental, political, economic, financial, administrative, technological, cultural and social changes; this is the case of the lakes, its problems regarding an appropriate management have been solved through local solutions.

The 2020 edition of the 18th World Lake Conference (WLC18), will be held in the city of Guanajuato, Mexico, This conference will continue with the efforts in benefit of governance, resilience and sustainability of lakes, throughout knowledge generation, information exchange, experiences and best practices, proposing a meeting space for experts, authorities in charge of their administration, users, technologists, scientists, professionals, students and civil society members who are interested in spreading, learning and fomenting pertinent actions for a comprehensive management of lakes.

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

It began with the Shiga Conference on Conservation and Management of World Lake Environment in 1984, known as LECS'84, which was held at Lake Biwa, Japan with the objective of contribution and promotion of scientific studies in the global management of lake basins.

The Conference is recognized worldwide as a platform for participants, from diverse areas, to exchange views and experiences on the sustainable management of lakes and their basins.

The conferences have been held in the United States, Hungary, China, Italy, Argentina, Denmark, Kenya, India, Indonesia and Japan on a biannual basis.

At the 17th World Lake Conference held in Ibaraki in 2018, there were around 5,500 participants; 1,300 students and 1,000 foreigners participated in the conference and 43,000 in the related site events.
